I Believe in Jesus Christ

Passion for God’s Work

Read John 2:13–23

Some Christians are shocked when they first read this story about Jesus expressing passion and anger. “Jesus did not sin; how could He be angry?” they ask.

They are right and wrong. Jesus did not sin. Anger is a natural emotion like joy or sorrow. It becomes sinful when it is uncontrolled and aimed at hurting others or seeking revenge.

Jesus expressed righteous anger against those who violated and disrespected His Father’s house and exploited people for their own ends. His anger was aimed at eliminating sin and injustice, and refocusing attention back to His Father.

The Passover Feast was a celebration of God’s mighty deeds in freeing His people from slavery in Egypt. The marketplace atmosphere created in the temple courts made it impossible for people to focus on worshipping God. Jesus did not sin. He acted and spoke clearly on His Father’s behalf:

Get these out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market? (John 2:16).

Challenge for Today: Ask the Holy Spirit to give you discernment, wisdom, and courage to speak on the Father’s behalf when the situation warrants it.
